Erlan

Name: Erlan

Age: 24

Rebirth: 17th

Physical Description:

Height: 5’ 11”

Weight: 157lbs

Skin: light blue-grey

Hair: grey-white

Eyes: blue-white irises without pupils

Other traits: slightly pointed ears, black facial markings, ~5ft span black crow-like wings with vestigial “thumb” claws

Clothing: gold phoenix hair pin and “crown”, ivory and black silk inner robes altered to give wings freedom of movement, deep celadon blue over robe made of two voluminous embroidered silk panels joined at the nape form long sleeves and obscure folded wings, layered cloak of sheer and brocade dark gray silk with mantle of black feathers completes disguise of wings, belt, ties, and other accessories of carved white jade, embroidered silk, and tassels

Personality: helpful and generous, Erlan has an affable public facing nature that quickly drops when alone. In solitude they are somber and introspective, lost in the emotions of past lives. They are forthcoming with stories of the past but reveal little of their self in the telling. While they follow the edicts and anathemas of Tsukiyo, the divinity whose path Samsarans believe will lead to enlightenment, Erlan holds in their heart that enlightenment is out of reach. Knowing that death is not final, Erlan will readily sacrifice their life for the sake of others.

The Curse: in the course of their many, albeit short, lives, Erlan has found their self cursed, corrupted, and otherwise altered by the powers and dying wrath of the beings they dared to stand against. While death is supposed to cleanse such things, in time the accumulated scars on Erlan’s soul have begun to manifest in their successive rebirths. From tattoo-like markings to demonic wings, each rebirth has begun to show the burdens of their past. The most terrifying inheritance has been a curse.

Unthinking Wrath: When struck by spirit damage must succeed at a DC 22 (GM decide) Will save or be overcome by a blind fury. This state lasts 1d4+1 rounds, during which time she’s under the effects of a fury similar to barbarian’s rage, although she doesn’t gain the benefits from that class feature, including bonuses to Strength, Constitution, or Will saves, and access to rage powers (even if the afflicted has the ability to rage normally). While in a fury, the afflicted takes a –2 penalty to AC, can’t use any Charisma-, Dexterity-, or Intelligence-based skills (except Acrobatics, Fly, Intimidate, and Ride) or any ability requiring patience or concentration, and attacks the individual nearest to her. If multiple targets are equally close, the afflicted person attacks randomly each round.

Background:

Born this life to a large cloth merchant family in Vannisaria, north of Shenmen, the joy of Erlan’s birth as a fortuitous Samsaran soon shifted to wariness and eventual disdain as more of their cursed traits began to manifest. Only their mother’s affection endured and as they reached adulthood she gave Erlan the means to travel south to Changdo where their differences would be less noticeable and more accepted. Along the way Erlan’s boat docked in Karahai where they heard a familiar, if long forgotten, name. Erlan has lived in Willowshore for two years, where Sarantuyaa, a lover from two lifetimes ago, settled down, lived, and died. Erlan keeps casual watch over her great granddaughter, Ba-ming Ouh, while seeking to understand why Sarantuyaa chose such an place to live out her life and raise a family.
